A Short Walk at the End of the Light

On evenings, endings, and the small ceremony of letting a day be done.

A west Texas Sunset

It is 8:30 PM on a Tuesday, and Mark is staring at the television, seeing nothing. His work laptop sits closed on the coffee table. He is technically home, and technically off the clock. But his mind is still stranded in the middle of a 3:00 PM boardroom meeting, replaying a tense exchange with an impatient board member. He is drafting defensive email replies in his head and double-checking the math on next quarter’s revenue projections. The official workday ended hours ago, but the one Mark is actually living in remains wide open. In the modern knowledge economy, there is no factory whistle or commute to automatically sever the connection. So his days bleed into one another, leaving him with a deep, chronic tiredness that sleep never seems to fix. We are tired from carrying days we never set down.
