The Things You Did Not Say

A quiet inventory of restraint — the words held back that held something together.

A woman chooses not to speak

You have been meaning to tell her for months. The critical deadline she saved, the donor she quietly rescued, the steady competence you've leaned on for years. You've thought I should thank her for that a dozen times while reviewing the team's project boards or checking the budget in QuickBooks. Yet you never said it. You assumed she knew how much she mattered, believing that silence was neutral. But silence is never neutral; it has a weight and a presence of its own. We keep careful track of the words we say—rehearsing them, replaying them at two in the morning—but the things we keep meaning to say, the overdue thank-you's, the hard conversations, the apologies, slip away unrecorded, carrying a cost we never see.
